You may have heard of the classic pregnancy do’s and don’ts for women planning to parent, such as avoiding alcohol, stopping smoking, and taking a prenatal vitamin.

But what about if you don’t know what pregnancy option you’re going to choose? Taking care of your and your pregnancy’s health is a good idea.

Continue reading for some early pregnancy do’s and don’ts, and schedule an appointment at Crystal Women’s Clinic to confirm your pregnancy and discuss every option in a confidential setting.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Early Pregnancy

Taking healthy steps can help your pregnancy develop as you consider your options. Here are some early do’s and don’ts.

DO…

  • Take a prenatal vitamin with folic acid.
  • Eat a nutritious diet with lots of fruits and vegetables.
  • Get enough sleep and rest or nap when you can.
  • Ask your doctor about potentially taking an iron supplement.
  • Exercise regularly, such as taking a daily walk.
  • Hydrate all day long! Your body needs more water during pregnancy.
  • Limit caffeine to 200 mg per day (about two cups).
  • Only take pregnancy-safe medications.

DON’T…

  • Drink alcohol in any amount.
  • Take illegal drugs or drugs unsafe for pregnancy.
  • Smoke, whether that be cigarettes or marijuana.
  • Eat foods that are high in mercury (ex. tuna).
  • Eat foods that have a risk of infection (raw/undercooked foods, unpasteurized foods, unwashed vegetables, etc.).
  • Drink herbal teas without consulting a doctor first.
  • Do activities with a risk of impact (contact sports) or falling (such as climbing a ladder).
  • Go in hot tubs or saunas (the temperature is too high).

Use Your Best Judgment

Pregnancy does come with personal sacrifices, and stopping certain activities, such as smoking or drinking alcohol, is extremely important because they cause known complications.

However, other recommendations are for reducing risks. For example, if you climb a ladder, you might be fine, but if you fall, it could be especially devastating for your pregnancy.

Our list is not exhaustive, but using your best judgment in all situations can go a long way. Ask your doctor if you’re ever uncertain about whether a food, drink, drug, or action is safe for your pregnancy.

Keep in mind, if you do struggle with addiction, such as drugs and alcohol, help is available. There are support groups, resources, and programs to support you along the way.
