A recent study conducted by Columbia University found that pregnant women are no more at risk than the general population when it comes to COVID-19. And another study found there was no evidence of a pregnant woman passing COVID-19 to her baby. 

In fact, it’s well known that the placenta surrounding your baby is a natural barrier against most infections or diseases that you may encounter. That means that your baby is safe and protected in your uterus during this pandemic.

While there is no known increased risk to pregnant women from COVID-19, you’ll still want to exercise the same caution you would with any other respiratory illness. That’s because any symptoms, like a high fever or difficulty breathing, can create complications for your pregnancy and should be discussed with your doctor.

Precautions for Pregnancy

Experts advise that pregnant women follow the same healthcare precautions recommended for the general population. This means following social distancing guidelines, like avoiding crowded areas, washing your hands frequently, and avoiding exposure to people that are showing symptoms of respiratory infections. If you begin to experience symptoms related to COVID-19 or other respiratory illnesses, like a cough or fever, contact your doctor immediately so they can monitor your health and the health of your pregnancy.
