I’m Pregnant and My Partner Is Abusive
If you’re in this situation, we are so sorry. Pregnancy has its own challenges, even without having to navigate a violent relationship. You deserve to be fully safe and respected.
Continue reading for tips on what to do in this situation. However, if you’re facing immediate danger, call 911. You can also reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline for abuse-specific support and to make an exit plan.
While any amount or level of abuse is still abuse, understanding your level of safety can help you know how urgent your next steps should be.
If you’re worried your partner could physically hurt you or your pregnancy, it’s time to get out now, without delay. If you live together, pack a bag of essentials and think about asking the police to escort you as you retrieve the rest of your belongings.
If it’s not that level of abuse, and maybe it’s more emotional or verbal, still think about ways you can safely break up and move on. You deserve to be treated with respect physically and emotionally.
If you received a positive pregnancy test, verify your pregnancy with an ultrasound scan. This scan will tell you your gestational age (how far along you are), the location of your pregnancy (in the uterus or ectopic), and whether or not your pregnancy is progressing.
Based on your ultrasound scan results, you will learn all your available options. Plus, you will learn your estimated due date if you carry the pregnancy to term. All these details will play a role in your planning.
While we will always encourage couples to make a pregnancy decision together, abuse is different. In an abusive situation, your safety comes first, and keeping your partner out of the picture can protect you.
The decision is yours. Consider what you want for the future and your desires. While you may be nervous about the future, especially if your partner provides the income or housing, we can connect you with organizations to help you start fresh.
