When it comes to the abortion pill, there are certain factors that women can change and those that they can’t change that play a role in their safety. Keep reading to learn more about each category.

Factors that Can Change

Women with the following conditions would need to make adjustments with their healthcare provider before moving forward with the abortion pill.

  • Having an intrauterine device (IUD) currently in place. This device would need to be removed first.
  • Taking certain medications like steroids and blood thinners. These women would need to talk to their doctors about changing their medications or whether changing or stopping their medications could lead to health issues.
  • It’s vital to evaluate all the drugs you’re taking and see if they interact with abortion drugs. There are over 350 drugs that have major interactions with mifepristone, and three that have major interactions with misoprostol.

Factors that Won’t Change

Here are a few conditions that women cannot change. These would make the abortion pill risky to a woman’s health, making other options safer.

  • Being farther along than ten weeks in pregnancy. Once a woman is beyond ten weeks, the FDA no longer approves the abortion pill.
  • Having certain health conditions, especially those related to the blood or heart, such as anemia, some bleeding disorders, and certain heart or blood vessel diseases. Additionally, chronic adrenal failure, severe kidney, liver, or lung disease, or an uncontrolled seizure disorder would rule out the abortion pill.
  • Having an allergy to the drugs used (mifepristone or misoprostol).
  • Having a suspected ectopic pregnancy (when the embryo attaches outside the uterus). In this case, the abortion pill wouldn’t work, and the non-viable pregnancy would go undetected, which could lead to life-threatening bleeding.
